NELSON MANDELA YOUTH & HERITAGE CENTRE IN QUNU
The Nelson Mandela Youth and Heritage Centre, in Qunu, has carved itself a spot as a top conference destination in the rural landscape of Nelson Mandela’s home village, where the whole world came to celebrate his 90th birthday including such international celebrities such as Will Smith, Denzel Washington and others.
Since opening, the Centre has proved popular among corporates, attracting business from the Development Bank of Southern Africa, the Business Summit, and the Mandela Rhodes scholarship beneficiaries, to name a few.
The Centre’s success draws from its fully equipped conference centre and accommodation facilities, and, above all, its resonance as the iconic village where Nelson Mandela spent his formative years. These give it an exciting edge compared to competitors playing in the same space.
The Nelson Mandela Youth and Heritage Centre boasts world-class facilities. These include boardrooms, a mini hall that can be used for seminar-style sessions, high tech electrical equipment comprising a PA system, overhead projectors and DVD equipment.
For delegates wishing to stay on site, there are three dormitory style African themed houses and two beautifully decorated dining areas. It can accommodate up to 60 people at a time. All our rooms have air conditioners. Six of our rooms have been upgraded into executive rooms with double beds and two single beds, DSTV, study desk, bar fridge for self-catering purposes.
Because a trip to Qunu should never end without a touch of Madiba magic, delegates are also taken on a memorable cultural experience offering insights into the life of Nelson Mandela with guided tours and a heritage trail that follows in his footsteps.
Delegates will see the sliding rock where he used to play, the old stone church where he was baptised and the ruins of his primary school.
The rewards of the conference centre are not limited to the Nelson Mandela Museum as the wider community has also been drawn in.
As part of the Museum’s commitment to uplifting the community, a revolving catering system was introduced to allow local caterers to bid for business. Each community member is invited to submit a tender for a conference by submitting a menu for selection by the delegates. This system is open to all catering businesses, however small, and the system has proved to be very successful.
