To Whom It May Concern


The Nelson Mandela Museum is a not for profit institution established by the government of South Africa as part of a portfolio of legacy projects that seek to transform the heritage landscape from our apartheid past. At the same time, it is a resource for promoting economic development throughout tourism in an impoverished region of the country. This is a region in which I was born and grew up.

I was privileged to open the Museum five years ago, and continue to take personal interest in its work. In our view it is working hard to give substance to its vision of becoming “a living museum….. that embraces development and inspires people through education, culture and tourism.”

The Museum invites applications from suitably qualified, committed, competent and experienced South Africans to serve as:

Education Material Development and Outreach Officer.

 SALARY PACKAGE:  R259 382 including benefits

This position will be situated primarily at Bhunga Building of the Nelson Mandela Museum but services all three sites mentioned above and reports to the Senior Manager : Public Engagement

 Strategic Purpose of the Position

  • To make provision for the development, maintenance and coordination of innovative educational programs for various audiences to maximize the use of the Nelson Mandela Museum resources in learning and educational programs.
  • To ensure the development of relevant learning materials, stand alone or in support of school programs.
  • To ensure the ongoing presence of the Nelson Mandela Museum in the lives of learners, young people, South African citizens and citizens of the world.

Key performance areas

  • In consultation with the relevant manager develop, manage and coordinate educational and material development programs.
  • In consultation with the relevant manager develop and implement appropriate and innovative programs for heritage education
  • Integrate knowledge of heritage, heritage theory and national education framework into the Nelson Mandela Museum programs.
  • Work closely with the Exhibitions Unit to ensure both indoor and travelling exhibitions talk to the schools’ curriculum of various grades.
  • Conduct educational tours.
  • In collaboration with Research unit develop, prepare and implement museum education programmes for a variety of age groups and settings
  • Develop and prepare information manuals and associated informational materials for educational exhibits and related initiatives.
  • Introduce and promote Time Travel to schools.
  • Serve as an educational liaison on museum issues between schools and educational agencies

Key Requirements of the Job


 (a) Matriculation

 (b) Education Degree or equivalent 3 years National Diploma in Education  

(c) Museology or Heritage Degree/ National Diploma or related field would be an advantage

Experience/Skills requirements

  • Evidence of good track record of innovative education and training approaches gained over 3 years.
  • Up to date knowledge of theories, approaches and the South African education system and their applicability to program development
  • Commitment to and understanding of heritage transformation in the South African context.
  • Understanding of the ideas that Nelson Mandela represents
  • Demonstrate evidence of initiative and ability to lead teams
  • Experience of and commitment to working in a democratic ethos.
  • A minimum of code 8 drivers license
