A personal message from Mr. Mandela

6 March 2005

To Whom It May Concern

The Nelson Mandela Museum is a not for profit institution established by the government of South Africa as part of a portfolio of legacy projects that seek to transform the heritage landscape from our apartheid past. At the same time, it is a resource for promoting economic development throughout tourism in an impoverished region of the country. This is a region in which I was born and grew up.

I was privileged to open the Museum five years ago, and continue to take personal interest in its work. In our view it is working hard to give substance to its vision of becoming “a living museum….. that embraces development and inspires people through education, culture and tourism.”

We would encourage and value any assistance which you are in a position to give to the Museum.

I thank you

The Mandela Legacy Canvas will be unveiled at the Nelson Mandela Museum Bhunga Building, Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa, on Friday 12 May 2017 from 09h00.

The canvass was bought by BATC (British American Tobacco Company) from a fundraising auction in 2011. The proceeds went towards the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

After keeping it with great care and pride, BATC has now donated the canvass to the Nelson Mandela Museum for exhibiting. The canvas will be officially unveiled at the Nelson Mandela Museum Bhunga building premises in presence of the honourable Prince Azenathi Zanelizwe Dalindyebo, the Acting king of abaThembu. Prince Azenathi Zanelizwe Dalindyebo is the grandson of the late King Sabata Jonguhlanga Dalindyebo, a father to the King of AbaThembu Buyelekhaya Zwelibanzi Dalindyebo.

The occasion will also be embraced by the grandsons of Nelson Mandela; Chief Mandla ‘Zwelivelile’ Mandela and Mr Ndaba Mandela.

The Mandela Legacy Canvas is made from the hand - prints of 67 celebrities that included former FIFA President Sepp Blatter, Prince Albert of Monaco; Boris Johnson, London Mayor; Reggie Bush, US football star; Djimon Hounsou, Hollywood star; Black Mambazo; Freshly Ground; Jurgen Klinsmann, German soccer legend; President of Gabon ;Ali Bongo Ondimba, Dr Danny Jordan, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, The Western Cape Premier Ms Helen Zille, The Minister in the Presidency Mr Jeff Radebe and former Bafana Bafana stars Quinton Fortune, Sean Bartlett and many other legends .

The programme of the day will include debuting of other exciting new projects that are set to create more global participation and access to the Nelson Mandela Museum and profile it internationally, such as the Google Expedition. The Google Expedition forms part of the digital pathway embraced by Museums all over the world.  It affords the Museum’s patrons, far and near, an enjoyable virtual tour via the website.
