About the Nelson Mandela Museum

MVEZO QUNU MTHATHA

The Nelson Mandela Museum (www.nelsonmandelamuseum.org.za) is an agency of the South African Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. Ten years after his release from prison, Nelson Mandela officially launched the museum in February 2000 at Mvezo, Qunu and Bhunga (Mthatha), Eastern Cape, South Africa. The museum is in close proximity to his house in Qunu, his burial site, and the sliding stone, on which he and his childhood friends played. The museum strives to

“inspire positive change in society through the values and legacy of Nelson Mandela”.

The work of the museum is guided by the values and principles of respect for humanity, dignity, integrity, innovation, and Ubuntu (a person is a person through other people). The museum houses a significant number of gifts presented to him from all over the world and hosts numerous programs for youth..
